One of the best things about traveling is bringing inspiration back home. Our first day in Moscow we visited a Georgian (the country!) restaurant and we fell in love with the cuisine. During the week we try to eat vegetarian, so why not try making pkhali ourselves?
For Koen and my big trip this year, we planned a three week trip from Moscow to Beijing, traveling by train on the Trans-Siberian and Trans-Mongolian Express. After a ton of research, an intinerary was made and we were ready to go off and explore!
The first day we arrived in the late afternoon and wanted to start off slow, to save our energy because the next day we had a lot of planned to do. So we decided to head to Sahli for a delicious Georgian meal.
One of the recipes my grandmother was most excited to pass down to me is her recipe for Brunswick Stew. I think every Southern family has their own version, and this is ours (although the exact steps I won’t tell!). To accompany the stew, Koen grilled a piece of brisket on the Green Egg and made biscuits!
Learning Grandma’s chicken and dumplings was also requested by my brother. It wouldn’t okay for Grandma to make it without him also being able to enjoy the meal! So this really was a Grandma and grandchildren effort – even Edward helped!
There were a few times the whole family was together. So what better than grilling as a family? I made my favorite grilled vegetable salad, my dad grilled steaks and corn, and my mom baked a fresh loaf of sourdough bread along with potatoes – both regular and sweet.
One of the best parts of being in Georgia was cooking family recipes with my grandparents. Of course my very first cooking lesson had to be my favorite – fried chicken and biscuits!
My parents have lived in Macon, Georgia for a few years now, so with this visit they were able to show us around and take us to some of their favorite places.
Going back to Georgia = family time. Although technically vacation, I want to spend all of my time seeing everyone and catching up. I do my best while in Belgium with Skype, Facetime and Whatsapp, but nothing beats face to face!
After a busy 9 days in New York City, Koen and I went down to Georgia for a week to visit with family. There’s really no place like home. We enjoyed a relaxing week eating well and enjoying time with family – including meeting my nephew Edward for the first time! I’m so thankful Koen and I were able to see everyone! We had a big low country boil to celebrate Grayson and I being home at the same time. It mostly turned into a baby holding party 🙂
4 years ago today I married the love of my life! It is unbelievable how quickly the years have flown by. In celebration I am making a wedding post! A special thank you goes out to Ian Aleksander Adams and Beth Heppenstall for the beautiful photos!
